Salto del Malleco is a 49 m waterfall and the natural outlet of Laguna Malleco. It is inside Tolhuaca National Park, in the municipality of Curacautín.
It is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in southern Chile. To reach the viewpoint, you walk a lovely 2 km round-trip trail surrounded by huge native trees.
Tolhuaca National Park is open year-round, but in winter the roads are in very poor condition and often snowy. More adventurous visitors with 4x4 vehicles can go in October and November, when there is more water in the falls thanks to the snowmelt.
Tips:
- Stop by the Curacautín tourist office, opposite the main square, and ask about the condition of the road to Tolhuaca National Park.
- Ideally a 4x4; in summer any vehicle will do, with care.
- Cash for the park entry fee. See prices here.
- Pets are not allowed in any national park or reserve.
- Don't leave trash, and enjoy nature.
